For the resins most commonly used in supplement bottles, HDPE and PP, the fundamental barrier performance (moisture and oxygen transmission rate) of PCR resin is close to virgin resin of the same polymer type, because barrier properties are largely a function of the base polymer's molecular structure, not whether that specific batch of pellets has been through a prior use cycle. The bigger practical variable is consistency and contamination control in the PCR supply chain, not an inherent barrier degradation from the recycling process itself.

Where PCR genuinely needs extra diligence for supplements

Because supplement bottles are ingestible-adjacent packaging, direct contact with capsules, tablets, and powders that a consumer will consume, contamination control in the PCR sourcing chain matters more here than in a non-ingestible application. Ask for documented decontamination validation, the same "super-clean" process standard referenced in FDA's food-contact recycled plastics guidance, before specifying PCR content on anything touching the product directly, as opposed to an outer packaging layer with no product contact.

Odor is a smaller concern for supplements than for cosmetics

Supplements are generally less odor-sensitive than fragrance-free cosmetic formulas, since most consumers don't evaluate a supplement bottle by scent the way they might a skincare product, which makes PCR's mild residual-odor risk a lower-stakes concern in this category. This doesn't eliminate the need for odor-testing PCR resin lots, particularly for flavored or aromatic supplement formats, but it's a smaller practical barrier than it is in cosmetics.

What a realistic PCR specification looks like

A 25 to 30 percent PCR HDPE bottle with documented food-contact-equivalent decontamination is a well-supported, low-risk sustainability claim for most supplement programs. Higher PCR percentages are achievable but should be validated against your specific formula and shelf-life requirement before committing at scale.
