What Is PET? Clarity, Barrier Properties, and Stretch Blow Molding Explained

Clarity and Optical Properties

PET is naturally transparent with glass-like clarity, a property none of the polyolefins (HDPE, LDPE, PP) can match without additives that compromise other properties. This is PET's single biggest differentiator and the reason it dominates categories where product visibility drives purchase decisions.

Gas Barrier Properties

PET has meaningfully better oxygen and carbon dioxide barrier properties than HDPE, which is why it is the standard resin for carbonated beverages and any product sensitive to oxygen ingress over shelf life.

Stretch Blow Molding: Why PET Needs It

PET bottles are made through a two-step process: a preform is injection molded first, then reheated and stretched axially before being blown to final shape. The stretching step orients the polymer chains in two directions, which is what gives PET its strength and clarity. Without the stretch step, both properties are lost, which is why PET is essentially never extrusion blow molded the way HDPE is.

Impact Strength Relative to Weight

Stretch-oriented PET achieves high impact strength at low wall thickness, letting brands run lighter bottles than an equivalent HDPE container without sacrificing durability. This is part of why PET dominates single-serve beverage and cosmetic bottle categories where shipping weight matters.

Where PET Falls Short

PET does not block UV light without additives, so it is a poor choice for light-sensitive formulas unless combined with a UV inhibitor or tint. It also has lower chemical resistance than HDPE against certain solvents and surfactants, and it cannot match PP's heat resistance for hot-fill applications without specialty heat-set PET grades.

Recyclability

PET (resin code 1) has the most mature recycling infrastructure of any plastic packaging resin in the U.S., which is a genuine sustainability advantage worth factoring into material selection alongside performance requirements.
