Two Testing Approaches

Real-time stability testing stores product under normal conditions and tracks degradation over the actual claimed shelf life. It's the gold standard, but slow, since an 18-month shelf life claim requires 18 months of testing. Accelerated aging testing stores product at elevated temperature and humidity to simulate the chemical and physical degradation of longer time periods in a compressed testing window, using established models to extrapolate an equivalent real-time result.

Where Packaging Fits Into Shelf Life

Product formulation is only part of shelf life. Packaging barrier properties, closure seal integrity, and light protection all directly affect how long a product stays stable. A supplement in a bottle with poor oxygen barrier will degrade faster than the identical formulation in a higher-barrier package, which is why barrier property selection and shelf life testing are connected decisions.

Confirm whether shelf life and stability testing was run with the actual packaging. A supplier able to share accelerated aging data specific to the bottle, closure, and resin combination is providing a real answer.
