From Quote to Production: What Actually Happens During a Custom Tooling Project

Custom packaging timelines get underestimated more often than they get overestimated. Knowing what actually happens between a quote request and a finished pallet lets a buyer plan a launch date that survives contact with reality.

Step 1: Spec Review and Quote

An accurate quote needs the target volume, resin, container dimensions, closure type, and fill line requirements upfront.

Step 2: Tooling Design and DFM Review

Before steel is cut, the design goes through a DFM review checking wall thickness, draft angles, gate placement, and tolerance stack-up.

This step runs as a back-and-forth across multiple rounds. Expect at least one round of revisions on any genuinely custom design.

Step 3: Mold Fabrication

Tooling lead time typically runs several weeks depending on part complexity, number of cavities, and whether the design requires side-action slides.

Multi-cavity molds and parts with tight tolerances or undercuts extend this timeline. Simple single-cavity tools move faster. Harder steel also machines slower, so the grade selected moves the schedule as well as the price.

Step 4: First Article Samples (T1)

The first parts off a new mold get reviewed against dimensional specs and functional requirements, including fit with mating components like caps, fitments, or filling equipment.

Step 5: Mold Revisions if Needed

If T1 samples reveal a dimensional or functional issue, the mold gets adjusted and a second round of samples is produced.

Budget for this possibility. T1 is often final, though planning around a guaranteed first-pass approval is how launch dates slip.

Step 6: Production Run

Once samples are approved, production timeline is a function of cycle time per part multiplied by total volume, adjusted for machine capacity and cavity count.

Higher cavity counts and faster cycles reduce total production time for a given volume, which makes cavitation a speed lever as well as a cost lever.

Step 7: QC and Shipping

Finished goods go through inspection before shipment, then move on FOB terms with freight lead time added on top of production time.

Ocean is longer than air and varies by origin facility and destination port. Container weight and cube limits can also force a second container, which adds days.

Setting Realistic Expectations

From approved quote to product landed at the buyer's dock, a genuinely custom tooling project runs months once tooling, sampling, production, and freight are accounted for.

Stock or lightly modified tooling moves considerably faster, since it skips mold fabrication entirely.
