Flexible Packaging 101: Stand-Up Pouches, Films, and Barrier Bags Explained

Flexible packaging gets treated as the budget option, and in the right application it is also the better-performing option on cost, shipping weight, and shelf stability.

What Flexible Packaging Is

Flexible packaging is built from multi-layer film structures. Each layer contributes a different property: a barrier layer for oxygen or moisture, a structural layer for strength, a sealant layer for heat-sealing. Those layers are laminated together into a single film that forms the finished bag or pouch.

Stand-Up Pouches

A gusseted base lets the pouch stand upright on shelf, which is what distinguishes a stand-up pouch from a flat pillow bag.

Common closure options include resealable zippers for repeat-use products and spouts for pourable liquids and powders. Gusset construction adds a manufacturing step versus a simple flat seal, but it earns its keep in shelf presentation and usability.

Barrier Films

Oxygen transmission rate (OTR) and moisture vapor transmission rate (MVTR) are the two numbers that matter for shelf stability, and the film's layer structure sets both.

A common laminate combines PET for structural strength and printability, foil or metallized film for the barrier layer, and PE for the heat-sealable inner layer. That inner sealant is usually an LDPE grade, chosen for its low seal-initiation temperature. Match the layer stack to what the product inside actually needs protection from, using the same barrier logic that governs rigid containers.

When Flexible Beats Rigid

Flexible packaging wins decisively on shipping weight and cube efficiency. A case of pouches weighs and packs a fraction of the equivalent case of rigid bottles, which shows up directly against ocean container weight and cube limits at volume.

It also handles powders and granules well, where a barrier pouch can match or exceed the shelf stability of a rigid container at lower material cost. Stick packs and single-serve sachets are the clearest example of that economics working.

When Rigid Still Wins

Anything requiring a child-resistant closure mechanism generally needs a rigid format, since CR compliance mechanisms are built around rigid container and cap assemblies. That constraint drives a lot of cannabis packaging back toward bottles and jars regardless of freight math.

Rigid packaging also generally reads as more premium on shelf, and it is reusable in a way flexible packaging typically is not.
