Barrier properties describe how well a packaging material blocks the passage of gases, moisture, and light: for products sensitive to oxidation or spoilage, this single spec can matter more than any other design decision.

Why Barrier Matters

Oxygen exposure degrades flavor in food and beverages, reduces potency in supplements and pharmaceuticals, and can cause discoloration in cosmetics. Moisture transmission ruins powders, capsules, and anything sensitive to humidity. A packaging material with poor barrier properties can undermine a product's shelf life no matter how well the product itself is formulated.

How Common Resins Compare

When Single-Layer Resin Isn't Enough

For products requiring barrier performance beyond what a single resin can provide, multilayer construction (combining a structural resin with a thin barrier layer like EVOH or a metallized coating) achieves oxygen transmission rates that no single-layer plastic can match. This adds cost and complexity but is standard practice for products like nutraceuticals, certain beverages, and moisture-sensitive cosmetics. Multilayer barrier films and mylar bags are the usual route when a rigid container cannot hit the target transmission rate.

Matching Barrier to Product Need

Not every product needs maximum barrier protection, and over-specifying barrier performance adds unnecessary cost. The right approach starts with the product's actual sensitivity (shelf life target, oxygen sensitivity, and moisture sensitivity) and works backward to the resin or multilayer structure that meets it without overpaying for unneeded barrier performance.
