
The closure is the part of the package customers touch most, and the type specified shapes the entire user experience of the product.
A hinged lid connected to the base by a living hinge, opened with a single flick of the thumb. Molded almost exclusively in PP for the hinge's fatigue resistance. No other commodity resin survives tens of thousands of hinge cycles without cracking. Common on gels, lotions, and condiments where one-handed dispensing matters.
Similar mechanism to a flip-top, built around a smaller, spring-loaded disc that pops open at the center. Common on shampoo, body wash, and other high-volume liquids dispensed by squeezing the bottle.
The simplest and most common closure, threading directly onto the bottle's finish. Comes in continuous-thread and lug-style variants. Screw caps can integrate child-resistant mechanisms, induction seal liner compatibility, or tamper bands depending on the application.
Screw caps are also where resin choice shows up in performance. PP holds thread dimension under sustained torque. HDPE gives better impact resistance and a softer sealing surface, at some cost to dimensional stability.
Used on stand-up pouches and some bottles for pourable liquids and powders. Spouts range from simple open-pour designs to resealable versions with an integrated cap. Sealing a spout to a flexible film substrate requires material compatibility between the spout resin and the film's inner layer, which is usually a PE sealant.
Disc caps generally dispense faster and are cheaper to tool at volume, which makes them common on high-turnover personal care products.
Flip-tops offer a larger opening better suited to thicker formulas and read as slightly more premium in hand. That is part of why they show up more often on gels and specialty cosmetics formulas.
Viscosity is the first filter. Thick formulas need a wider opening than a disc cap provides, while thin liquids move fine through either.
Use context is the second. One-handed operation matters more for products used in the shower or kitchen than for a formula applied at a vanity with both hands free.
None of the above matters if the cap does not seat on the bottle. Closure type is a separate decision from neck finish, and the finish code is what governs whether a given cap physically fits.
Body shape is a third, independent variable. Any one of the three can change without disturbing the other two, which is worth knowing before a redesign turns into three separate tooling projects.
