Pre-rolls have a freshness problem bottles and jars don't

A pre-rolled joint has more exposed surface area relative to its volume than flower in a jar, which means it dries out and loses terpene content faster if the packaging doesn't manage humidity actively. This is the central design problem for pre-roll packaging: protect a small, fragile, oddly-shaped product from crushing, keep it from drying out, and still meet CR and opacity requirements, all in a format small enough to fit in a shirt pocket.

Tubes versus tins: different tradeoffs, not a clear winner

Push-and-pull plastic tubes are the lowest-cost, highest-volume format, effective at crush protection for a single pre-roll and straightforward to mold with an integrated CR mechanism. Tins, typically for multi-pack pre-roll offerings, protect against crushing more reliably across several units in one package but cost more per unit and are heavier to ship. Neither format is inherently better; the choice tracks pack count and price point more than any functional advantage.

Humidity control is where pre-roll packaging most often falls short

A sealed plastic tube with no humidity management will let a pre-roll dry out over weeks on a dispensary shelf, since plastic alone doesn't regulate internal moisture the way a jar with a humidity pack can. Integrated humidity control, either a small two-way humidity pack sized for the tube's volume or a tube material with some inherent moisture buffering, meaningfully extends shelf freshness compared to a bare plastic tube, and is increasingly expected on premium pre-roll lines specifically because dried-out pre-rolls are a common consumer complaint.

CR mechanism has to work at pre-roll scale

A CR closure sized correctly for a tube's diameter is a different tooling challenge than a CR closure for a standard jar, smaller push-and-turn mechanisms have less surface area to work with and need careful design to pass CR testing reliably at that scale. This is a common area where a stock tube's CR claim doesn't hold up under actual retest, worth confirming independently rather than taking a supplier's claim at face value.
