A desiccant, most commonly silica gel, absorbs ambient moisture inside a sealed container, protecting hygroscopic ingredients (ones that absorb water from the air) from clumping, degrading, or losing potency over shelf life. Not every supplement formulation is meaningfully moisture-sensitive, adding a desiccant to a formula that doesn't need one is an unnecessary cost and a component the consumer has to identify and discard, not a defect, but not a benefit either.
Probiotics, certain B vitamins, powdered greens blends, and any formula with hygroscopic mineral salts are common categories where moisture control genuinely extends functional shelf life. Softgels and liquid-filled capsules have different moisture dynamics entirely and generally don't benefit from a desiccant the way powder and tablet formats do.
A loose desiccant packet inside the bottle is the simplest and cheapest option but adds a small object consumers sometimes mistake for a product component, a labeling and consumer-communication issue more than a functional one. A desiccant built into the cap liner or a dedicated canister closure avoids that confusion and is increasingly available as a standard closure option, at a modest cost premium over a loose packet.
Accelerated shelf-life testing, exposing the actual formula to controlled humidity and temperature conditions over a compressed timeframe, is the reliable way to determine whether a specific formulation needs desiccant protection, rather than assuming based on ingredient category alone. Two products in the same general category can have meaningfully different moisture sensitivity based on specific excipients and processing.
