Stand-Up Pouches vs. Flat Bags: Choosing Flexible Packaging for Cannabis and Cosmetics

December 2, 2026

Stand-up kraft pouch used for flexible packaging

The core trade-off: shelf presence against material and fill cost

Stand-up pouches, built with a gusseted bottom that lets the package stand upright on a shelf, cost more per unit than flat bags because of the added material for the gusset and the more complex sealing geometry, but they read as more premium and use vertical shelf space more effectively in a retail setting. Flat bags cost less, run faster on many fill lines, and work fine where the package is going into a secondary display, a box, a case, a dispensary counter tray, rather than standing alone on a shelf.

Where stand-up pouches earn the added cost

Products competing directly on a retail shelf against other stand-up formats, most flower and pre-ground cannabis packaging, many snack and food-adjacent categories, generally need to match the category convention or look visibly cheaper by comparison. If your competitive set stands upright on the shelf, a flat bag can read as a lower-tier product regardless of what's actually inside it.

Barrier requirements matter more than format

Both formats can be built with the same barrier film structures, so the format decision and the barrier decision are mostly independent, don't assume a stand-up pouch automatically means better barrier protection, or that a flat bag means worse. Barrier performance comes from the film layer structure, not the bag shape.

Fill-line compatibility is worth checking before committing to a format

Stand-up pouches generally require fill equipment configured for the gusset geometry, and switching from flat bags to stand-up pouches on an existing line sometimes means new tooling or a different fill station, not just a different roll of film. Confirm your co-packer or in-house fill line can actually run the format before committing to it in packaging design.

What we build

We produce both formats and can advise on barrier film structure independent of the shape decision. For the barrier film layer question specifically, see Barrier Films Explained.
