
Overmolding TPE onto a PP substrate is common for soft-touch closure grips, cosmetic pump collars, and premium cap surfaces. It requires either a two-shot injection process on a single press, or an insert-molding process where a pre-molded PP part is placed into a second cavity for the TPE shot.
Either way, the bond between the two materials depends on genuine chemical compatibility. TPE and PP bond well because they share compatible polymer chemistry. TPE bonded to PET or another incompatible substrate often needs a different TPE grade, or fails to adhere reliably at all.

The most common overmold failure comes down to process control: substrate surface temperature too cool when the second shot hits it, contamination or mold release residue on the substrate surface, or insufficient dwell time for the TPE to wet out and key into the substrate's microsurface.
A soft-touch grip that peels or lifts at the edge after a few months in the field is almost always a process issue, assuming the TPE grade was correctly matched to PP in the first place.
Two-shot tooling costs meaningfully more than single-material tooling. The mold is more complex, and two-shot presses represent a smaller share of available molding capacity than standard single-shot machines.
Insert molding is a cheaper tooling path at lower volumes but adds a handling step between shots, which affects cycle time and labor cost differently than a true two-shot press. Either route changes the cavitation math, since a two-shot tool fits fewer cavities in the same mold base.
The overmold layer is a wall like any other, subject to the same wall thickness and gate placement constraints. A TPE layer that varies in thickness across the part will show differential shrink at the interface, which is where edge lift usually starts.
Soft-touch overmolding earns its cost on premium cosmetic closures, where shelf feel is part of the brand experience, and on ergonomic grips for larger dispensing packaging like pump collars.
It is a harder case to justify on commodity packaging where the closure is not a customer touchpoint.
