
Blister packs seal each individual dose in its own isolated cavity. Every unit gets its own moisture and oxygen barrier, independent of how many doses remain in the package.
Bottles share one barrier environment across the whole container. Once opened, every remaining dose is exposed to the same ambient air until the bottle is empty. For moisture-sensitive actives, or products with a long expected shelf life after first opening, that per-unit isolation is a real advantage bottles cannot structurally match.
Bottles are cheaper to fill at scale, simpler to source components for, and more forgiving of dose count changes between SKUs. The same bottle mold and cap can hold 30, 60, or 90 count with only a fill-level change, where a blister pack's cavity count is fixed at the tooling stage.
For most multivitamin and general supplement categories, where the actives are not especially moisture-sensitive, a bottle with a good induction seal delivers adequate shelf-life protection at meaningfully lower packaging cost.
Genuinely moisture- or oxygen-sensitive actives are the clearest case. So are travel and single-dose formats where portion control and portability matter more than bulk cost efficiency.
Blisters are also the format of choice when child-resistance is a design goal beyond a bottle cap, since a properly designed push-through or peel-push blister can meet CR testing requirements at the individual-cavity level.
Blister tooling is dose-count and shape specific. Changing pill count or capsule size typically means new tooling, where a bottle program can often absorb formulation or dose changes with minimal retooling. That weighs heaviest on programs where the formulation is still evolving.
