
Polypropylene shows up in more caps and closures than any other resin. Where HDPE is the workhorse for bottle bodies, PP is the workhorse for everything that opens and closes on top of them.
PP is a semi-crystalline thermoplastic with a density around 0.895 to 0.92 g/cm³, lighter than HDPE. Its molecular structure gives it a rare combination: high fatigue resistance under repeated flexing, strong chemical resistance, and the ability to withstand higher temperatures than PE without deforming.
PP's fatigue resistance is what makes the living hinge possible: a thin, flexible strip of the same resin that lets a flip-top cap open and close thousands of times without cracking. No other commodity resin matches PP's ability to flex repeatedly at a thin cross-section without fatigue failure. This single property is why PP dominates flip-top and disc-top closures.
PP holds up to higher temperatures than HDPE or LDPE, which matters for any packaging that goes through hot-fill processes or sterilization. This is part of why PP shows up in closures for products that are heat-sealed or hot-filled during packaging.
PP resists a broad range of acids, bases, and solvents, making it a reliable choice for closures on cosmetic, cleaning, and industrial chemical products where the cap needs to survive contact with aggressive formulas without degrading.
PP is more brittle than PE at low temperatures and can become stiff and prone to cracking in cold environments, a real consideration for products shipped or stored in cold climates. It is also less impact-resistant than HDPE at equivalent wall thickness, so it is rarely the first choice for large bottle bodies that need to survive drops.
PP is molded almost exclusively via injection molding for caps, closures, and jars. Shrinkage runs higher than PET but is generally predictable and well-documented, and cycle times are competitive, especially for the thin-wall geometry common in closures.
