Understanding MOQs: Why Minimum Order Quantities Exist in Custom Packaging Manufacturing

Every brand sourcing custom packaging for the first time asks the same question: why not just order 500 units? The honest answer is that minimum order quantities are set by real cost structures in injection and blow molding production.

Tooling Amortization

Custom tooling is a fixed cost that has to be spread across units. A mold that costs $8,000 to build adds $8 per unit at 1,000 units, but only $0.08 per unit at 100,000 units. Suppliers set MOQs partly to keep tooling amortization from making the per-unit price uncompetitive.

Resin Batch Minimums

Custom color-matched or specialty resin blends (particularly for cosmetic-grade PP or PCR-content HDPE) often have supplier-side minimum batch sizes. Ordering below that threshold can mean paying a premium for a partial batch or being unable to source the material at all.

Machine Changeover Economics

Every changeover between jobs costs a molding facility real production time: purging the barrel, swapping tooling, restarting and stabilizing the process before parts meet spec. Running a very small order ties up a machine for changeover time that isn't recovered by the order's revenue, which is why many suppliers set MOQs around what makes a changeover worthwhile.
