Michigan regulates cannabis packaging and labeling through the Cannabis Regulatory Agency (CRA), covering both the state's adult-use and medical marijuana programs under a shared packaging framework with some dose-limit differences between the two.
Michigan requires cannabis packaging to be child-resistant, tamper-evident, and opaque, meeting the effectiveness standards of the federal Poison Prevention Packaging Act. Multi-serving products require resealable packaging that maintains child-resistant effectiveness through the product's expected use life, not just at first opening.
Edible products are restricted to basic geometric shapes and cannot resemble humans, animals, fruit, or commercial candy brands. Packaging cannot use bright colors, cartoons, or other designs built to appeal to children.
Michigan's adult-use edibles are capped at 10 milligrams of THC per serving, consistent with most other states, but the package cap runs to 200 milligrams, roughly double the 100-milligram ceiling common in California, Colorado, Washington, and Oregon. Medical edibles carry a separate, higher limit still: 50 milligrams per serving and 500 milligrams per package. Cannabis-infused beverages carry their own separate cap of 100 milligrams per package regardless of category.
A packaging format built to the common 100-milligram, ten-serving standard used in most other adult-use states will clear Michigan's per-serving limit but sit well under its per-package ceiling, meaning Michigan is one of the few markets where a brand could legally offer a larger multi-serving edible format without a state-specific redesign, if the brand chooses to build to Michigan's higher cap rather than the more common national baseline.
